Solid thinking behind our new timber doors
Since we founded Solidcor in 2019, with the ambition to create a truly high-performance and maintenance-free fire door, we have quickly gone from strength to strength. Our flagship door ranges combine a solid timber core high-impact Esty-Plas skin that withstands the weather and eliminates the need for painting or maintenance. The overall performance and fire resistance of our doors have quickly earned them a strong reputation in the industry.
Not all entrance doors are required to be external grade, when many are located within indoor communal areas and corridors. And while our original doors are not a conventional composite door, they appear like one, and this can be a put-off for landlords who want to avoid the appearance of using composite doors, given the negative associations they carry in the minds of some residents.
We have been regularly asked if we can supply a premium product for timber fire doors for internal purposes. We’re pleased to say that we now can! But in true Solidcor style, we’re not content to deliver a mediocre product. We wanted to produce a timber door that looks like a timber door, but still carries the Solidcor advantage of almost no maintenance.
Unlike other ‘timber’ doors, in which particle board is often used, our new T30 doors are formed from laminated veneer lumber, creating a much denser body. And then they have the Esty-Plas skin – unique to Solidcor – which ensures the door comes to site pre-finished and ready to install. The door frame is made of solid sapele timber rather than the conventional engineered frames, and comes to site pre-painted.
The Esty-Plas skin is available in a range of colours and wood finishes, giving the appearance of either a painted door or a wood-veneered door. But unlike either of these conventional finishes, the Esty-Plas skin doesn’t deteriorate under normal usage. Everyday scratches don’t show, because the skin is almost 2mm thick and coloured throughout with the same colour as on the surface, and unlike paint, it doesn’t fade or crack over time.
By using superior quality materials, we have created doors that easily achieve the EN 1634 standard. In fact, our 30-minute timber fire doors actually achieved 44 minutes protection during tests – 14 minutes over the required standard and almost halfway towards the performance of a 60-minute fire door.
This new range of timber doors means we can offer our customers a full range of fire doors with all internal and external situations covered, all from one supplier. As with our existing doors, the new range uses materials that have been fully sourced and checked by Solidcor, then machined and assembled in our own factory. This makes the chain of traceability simple and enables our customers to buy doorsets “…complete with all essential parts from a single source…” as specified in BS EN 12519. All timber is obtained from traceable sources, with 87% having international PEFC™ and FSC® forest certification. And, as with all Solidcor doors, we turn around orders for our timber range within an industry-leading 10 days.
Available to order today, our new T30 doors will join our existing R30 and R60 doors, giving you a single reliable source for providing effective, certified door protection for all tenants.
